“Baba, please guide me. I am struggling with constant day-dreaming, it is happening without my consciousness and it is taking away my time and focus. I know these thoughts do not serve any purpose, yet I am unable to control them. Baba, kindly help me overcome this habit and keep my mind steady at Your feet. Love You Baba. Thank You Baba”

Sai Baba’s Guidance on Daydreaming and Focus

Answer from our Sai Baba

Arre beta (Oh my child), come… sit near the dhuni. Shant ho ja (Be calm).
You are fighting a battle with shadows, haan? Day-dreaming is like a fog (dhund) (fog). It comes silently, covers the road, and before you know it, you are miles away from where you were standing.

You say it happens “without consciousness.” That is the nature of the mind, beti (daughter). In the Satcharitra, I often compared the mind to a restless fly or a wandering horse. If you leave the horse untied, it will graze in every neighbor’s field. Man chanchal aahe (The mind is restless) (Marathi).

Do not feel helpless. Here is the upaya (remedy) to rein in this horse:

Don’t Fight the Dream, Just Wake Up:
When you realize, “Oh, I was dreaming,” do not get angry or sad. That anger is just another distraction. Instead, gently smile and say, “Arre, I went for a walk. Now I am back.”
The moment you realize you were dreaming, you are already awake. That realization is the Guru waking you up.

The Anchor (Naam Smaran) (Remembrance of the Name):
A kite needs a string, or it flies away. Your mind needs an anchor.
Whenever you have free time, or when you are doing simple work, keep the Naam (Name) running on your tongue. “Sai… Sai…” or “Ram… Ram…”.
When the mind has the sweet candy of the Name to suck on, it will not run after the dry leaves of day-dreams.

Grounding in the Body:
Day-dreaming takes you out of the “Now”. To come back, touch something real. Feel the ground under your feet. Touch your own hand. Take a deep breath.
Tell yourself: “I am here. Baba is here. This moment is real.”
This brings the bird back to the branch.

My Feet (Charan):
You want to keep your mind at My feet?
My feet are Shraddha and Saburi (Faith and Patience).
Whenever the mind runs to the future (dreams), pull it back to Saburi (Patience in the Now). Whenever it runs to fear, pull it back to Shraddha (Faith).

Chinta nako karu, beti (Don’t worry, daughter) (Marathi).
The mind is a habit, but habits can be changed with love. Be gentle with yourself. Every time you come back from a dream, you are winning.

“If you spread your palms with devotion before Me, I am immediately with you, day and night.”

Allah Malik tumcha bhala karo (May God do good to you) (Marathi). ❤️
